Kitchen- Best for
- Using the ceiling height for long-term storage — the top box takes what is used rarely, and the run reads floor to ceiling.
- Watch out
- The top box is above comfortable reach — storage for a step-ladder. Two boxes stacked show a horizontal joint line unless the fronts are made as one tall door.
- Cost effect
- Higher — a second carcass and a second front per cabinet.
- Scope effect
- Ceiling height measured at several points along the run, because a ceiling out of level shows at the top box; and a decision on whether fronts are one door or two.
- Best for
- Everyday reach — the top shelf usable without a step for most people, with whatever sits above it decided separately.
- Watch out
- The space above is either wasted or has to be closed; left open it collects dust and, in a wok kitchen, grease.
- Cost effect
- The reference point — one carcass per cabinet.
- Scope effect
- Decide what happens above at the same time: an open gap, a plasterboard soffit or a scribed infill (DS26B).
