A backsplash is three zones, not one.
Approve a wall panel for a backsplash only for the specific zone its exact product is certified for — “wall panel” is not a general backsplash category, because WPC, SPC, PVC, PU, laminate, aluminium and glass behave very differently around heat, water and grease.

Do not approve fluted WPC behind a hob or sink, because:
- Grooves collect grease and dirt.
- Numerous joints are difficult to seal.
- Polymer content may soften or discolour under heat.
- Cut edges can admit water.
- Cleaning chemicals may affect the finish.
Use WPC on adjacent decorative walls, ending it before the functional backsplash.
Potentially acceptable behind a basin, pantry counter or light-duty preparation area if the manufacturer confirms:
- Waterproof application
- Stain and cleaning-chemical resistance
- A suitable adhesive
- Sealed edges and penetrations
- The required temperature limit
Do not approve it behind gas, radiant or high-heat cooking without explicit written certification.
Use only as a decorative feature away from water and cooking. Their textured surface, joints and polymer composition make them a poor functional kitchen backsplash.
Approve only a purpose-made splashback system with documented:
- Core composition
- Fire and heat performance
- Coating temperature resistance
- Approved hob type and clearance
- Edge and joint treatment
- A warranty for kitchen use
A decorative aluminium-composite wall panel is not automatically equivalent to a tested aluminium splashback.
One of the strongest premium alternatives:
- Seamless and easy to clean
- Custom colours
- Resistant to moisture and stains
- Suitable around cooking when correctly processed and installed
All socket and switch cut-outs must be completed before heat treatment. The glass specification, edge support, adhesive and clearance must follow the glass processor and appliance requirements.

The safest design rule is to create a non-combustible hob panel and let decorative wall panels continue on both sides. This keeps the wall-panel visual language without exposing the weakest material to the kitchen’s highest-risk area.
