Air-conditioning

Living Room
Air-conditioning — Wall split unit
Wall split unit
Best for
The pragmatic default — simplest to install, service and replace.
Watch out
The wall unit is visible and dictates where furniture can sit; it dates the room faster than the joinery.
Cost effect
The least expensive of the three.
Scope effect
Fixes wall position, drainage fall and the pipe route to the condenser — decide before the wall finish.

Air-conditioning — Ceiling cassette
Ceiling cassette
Best for
Even distribution across a square room from a single central point.
Watch out
Needs real ceiling void; it commits the ceiling design and is disruptive to retrofit.
Cost effect
Higher than a split.
Scope effect
Ceiling height, void depth and drainage fall must be settled before the ceiling is closed.

Air-conditioning — Concealed ducted / zoned
Concealed ducted / zoned
Best for
Concealing the system entirely across several rooms from one plant location.
Watch out
The most demanding of the three: duct routing, void depth and return-air paths all have to work, and service access must be planned.
Cost effect
The highest.
Scope effect
Drives the ceiling design across multiple rooms and must be coordinated with lighting and any structural downstand.
