Best for

Ventilation from a given opening — the sash opens fully, so airflow is typically good; it depends on sash size and wind direction.

Watch out

Cannot be left open in rain, and a full sash needs robust hinges in a coastal or humid location.

Moderate.

Consequential work

Needs swing clearance inside or out, and coordination with any security screen.

Sliding / large glazed

Best for

Wide openings where a swinging sash has nowhere to go.

Watch out

Only half the opening ever ventilates, and the bottom track collects dirt and needs regular clearing.

Track drainage must be resolved — a blocked track is a leak path in heavy rain.
