- Maximum ventilation from a given opening — the best airflow of the four.
- Watch out
- Cannot be left open in rain, and a full sash needs robust hinges in a coastal or humid location.

- Moderate.
- Scope effect
- Needs swing clearance inside or out, and coordination with any security screen.

- Best for
- Rain-prone elevations — it can stay open in a shower, which matters here.
- Watch out
- Restricts the clear opening, so it ventilates less than a casement of the same size.
- Cost effect
- Moderate.
- Scope effect
- Projects outward; check it does not foul walkways, grilles or an adjacent opening.
- Responsible

- Best for
- Wide openings where a swinging sash has nowhere to go.
- Watch out
- Only half the opening ever ventilates, and the bottom track collects dirt and needs regular clearing.
- Cost effect
- Moderate; large spans cost more.
- Scope effect
- Track drainage must be resolved — a blocked track is a leak path in heavy rain.
