Lighting fails when it's bought fixture-first. These rules decide layout before product.

Layered light, not one flat ceiling glare

Good lighting is three layers working together. Most Sibu homes only have the first — and the harshest version of it.

General (ambient)The base layer that lets you move and use the room safely. We aim for even, low-glare coverage instead of one bright central fitting that flattens everything and casts hard shadows.ELS checks: Even coverage, glare control, dimmable where it helps.

Design Direction starts from RM800 (excl. SST). Where it lands depends on scope and coordination, confirmed after site measurement.

Prepare before the lighting walk-through

A little prep makes the layout sharper and the coordination faster.

  • List the rooms you want to relight, and which feel darkest
  • Note where you actually work — worktops, desks, mirrors, hob
  • Mark which fittings, ceilings or cabinets must stay
  • Photograph current switches and ceiling points
  • Flag wet zones — wet kitchen, bathrooms, laundry
  • Note any new ALUMAX cabinets or wardrobes planned
  • Say whether warm or cool light suits each room
  • Confirm whether you'll allow any ceiling hacking at all

Common questions

Can you redesign my lighting without tearing out the ceiling?

Yes — that's the point of a retrofit lighting layer. We plan around the ceiling you have, favouring surface track, slim fittings that fit existing voids, perimeter coves and cabinet-integrated LED. Most layouts can add proper general, task and accent light without re-skimming or dropping the whole ceiling. Where a small amount of hacking genuinely improves the result, we flag it first so you decide — nothing is opened up by surprise.

What does 'layered lighting' actually mean?

It means three layers working together instead of one fitting doing everything. General (ambient) light lets you use the room safely and evenly. Task light is focused where you work — worktops, the hob, desks, mirrors. Accent light adds depth and calm through coves, wall washing and highlights. Most Sibu homes only have a single bright ceiling fitting, which flattens the room and casts hard shadows. Layering is what makes a space feel both functional and warm.

Why do you care so much about where the LED driver goes?

Because the driver usually fails before the LED strip does. If it was sealed behind a finished ceiling or buried inside a wet zone, a cheap part becomes an expensive demolition. We fix driver and transformer locations in reachable, ventilated, dry positions and plan access into ceilings and cabinets — so a future swap is a five-minute job, not a renovation.

Does the lighting layer include wiring and the fittings themselves?

No. ELS plans and coordinates the lighting layout — the layers, fixture types and directions, driver locations, switch positions and circuit logic, and cabinet integration with ALUMAX. The actual wiring and DB work is carried out by a licensed electrician, and fittings and bulbs are purchased separately. What you get from ELS is an approved layout the electrician and ALUMAX both quote and build against, instead of improvising on site.

How does lighting tie in with my new ALUMAX cabinets?

When cabinets or wardrobes are part of the job, lighting is coordinated into the cabinet specification rather than added afterwards. That means LED channels and profiles, sensor placement, colour temperature and — crucially — driver bays with access are decided alongside the joinery. The result is light that's built into the cabinet, not stuck on, and a driver you can still reach in three years.

Should kitchen and wet-area lighting be treated differently?

Yes. Wet kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas in Sarawak combine heat, steam and humidity, so we keep drivers and sensitive fittings out of the wet zone, use suitably rated fixtures, and place task light where it reaches the work without glare. We also keep every driver reachable from a dry, ventilated spot — putting a transformer above a steamy wet-kitchen ceiling is exactly the kind of decision that causes early failure.

Do I really need ELS for this, or can I just buy lights?

If it's a single fitting swap in a dry room, just buy the fitting and let an electrician change it — no ELS layer needed. ELS earns its place when several things must coordinate at once: layered light across rooms, drivers that need serviceable locations, switching and circuits that must group sensibly, and lighting that has to integrate with new ALUMAX cabinets. That's where an approved layout up front saves rework and surprise costs later.

How much does a lighting redesign cost?

Lighting design and coordination is delivered under the ELS Design Direction track, from RM800 (excl. SST). The figure scales with how many rooms and layers are involved, the retrofit complexity, and how much cabinet and switching coordination is needed. Site measurement is from RM300 in Sibu (RM500 outstation) and is creditable against the service on confirmation. The final quotation follows the measurement and approved scope.
