The Challenge

A typical ground-floor, flood-prone shophouse situation: a kitchen where a seasonal flood can destroy appliances and finishes, and the owner wants one designed to survive water of roughly 1.2m with minimal loss.

The Approach

Elevated all electrical to 1.5m height. Installed marine-grade 316 stainless steel cabinetry on reinforced concrete plinth (0.5m height). Specified polished concrete flooring with epoxy sealant. All appliances mounted on adjustable pedestals that can be removed before flooding.

The Outcome

Designed so a flood becomes a clean-up, not a rebuild: the electrics sit above the expected water line, the marine-grade stainless carcass and sealed concrete floor shrug off water, and appliances lift off their pedestals to be moved out ahead of rising water — so recovery is drying out, not replacing the kitchen.

  • Marine-grade stainless costs more up front, but in a flood zone it is the part designed to outlast the water
  • Elevated electrical design is non-negotiable — not cosmetic
  • Removable appliances on pedestals are a game-changer for flood mitigation
