Kuching Shophouse: Flood-Resilient Kitchen
Marine-grade stainless + elevated, flood-ready build
The Challenge
A typical ground-floor, flood-prone shophouse situation: a kitchen where a seasonal flood can destroy appliances and finishes, and the owner wants one designed to survive water of roughly 1.2m with minimal loss.
The Approach
The proposal raises all electrical to 1.5m height and sets marine-grade 316 stainless steel cabinetry on a reinforced concrete plinth (0.5m height). It specifies polished concrete flooring with an epoxy sealant, and mounts every appliance on an adjustable pedestal that can be removed before flooding.
Proposed resolution
Designed so a flood can become a clean-up rather than a rebuild: the electrics sit above the expected water line, the marine-grade stainless carcass and sealed concrete floor are specified to tolerate floodwater, and appliances lift off their pedestals to be moved out ahead of rising water — so recovery would be drying out rather than replacing the kitchen.
