Partitions & screens

Divide the room. Keep the air.

A partition is two decisions, not one: how much you want to see through it, and how much air you want through it. In this climate the second question matters as much as the first — a screen that lets the breeze cross is a different room from a wall of glass.

30 concept studies across 7 partition types. Concept studies — not photographs of completed projects.

The two axes

See-through, and breathe-through.

Clear glass partition

TransparentWithout airflowFramed clear glass

Separates without shrinking a room: light and the full sightline carry across, so a narrow terrace still reads as one space. It blocks air, which is exactly what an air-conditioned zone wants.

Sightline: Full — you see straight through · Best for: Zoning an open plan, a home office you still want to see into, or holding borrowed daylight in a dark core.

Fluted / reeded glass

Semi-transparentWithout airflowReeded glass in a slim frame

Privacy without darkness: the ribs blur the view but keep the glow. The tropical favourite for a wet-kitchen or study wall — screened, never sealed off. It blocks air.

Sightline: Softened — light and silhouette, not detail · Best for: A wet kitchen you want screened but bright, a study, or an ensuite off the bedroom.

Glass block

Semi-transparentWithout airflowStacked glass block, often backlit

A solid, structural wall of light: full privacy, an easy-clean surface, and a soft glow when it is lit from behind. It blocks air.

Sightline: Translucent — glows, gives no view · Best for: A bathroom or stair wall that needs privacy and light, but not a view through it.

Breeze-block screen

Semi-transparentWith airflowPerforated concrete / clay block

The Sarawak classic: perforated concrete divides the space while letting the breeze and the light pass straight through. Here it is ventilation as much as decoration — it works with the climate instead of against the aircon bill.

Sightline: Perforated — glimpses through the pattern · Best for: A courtyard edge, a covered patio, or a stair and entry that should breathe.

Slatted timber / mesh screen

Semi-transparentWith airflowTimber battens or perforated metal, often sliding

Warmth and adjustable privacy: air and light pass between the battens, and the view opens or closes as you move past. It slides or folds away when you want the whole space back.

Sightline: Angled — open along the slats, closed across them · Best for: A living-dining divider, a study you close for calls, or an entry screened from the street.

Zip-track weather screen

Semi-transparentWith airflowMesh in side channels, usually motorised

The practical answer to driven rain on a balcony or patio: the mesh sheds a squall and cuts the glare, yet air still moves through it — so an outdoor room stays usable through the monsoon. It rolls fully away when the weather is fine.

Sightline: Mesh — a soft view out, blurred by the weave · Best for: A balcony, veranda, covered patio or outdoor kitchen you want to keep using in the rain.

Insect & security screen

TransparentWith airflowFine mesh in a framed sliding or hinged leaf

Opens the house to the night air without the insects, and a heavier mesh adds security at an entry. Full airflow behind an almost-clear view — the one way to ventilate a house at night without giving up the door.

Sightline: Near-clear — you see straight through the mesh · Best for: A bedroom or balcony door you leave open for the breeze, or a security screen at the main entry.

The third level: non-transparent

A partition that blocks the view completely is a solid panel or a run of cabinetry — full privacy and the best acoustic separation, but no light and no air. When that is the need it is a feature wall or joinery, not a screen.
